pigeons

I was out trying to get some fall foliage pictures, and stopped by the parking lot of some day care center because I saw some flowering Acacia smallii there. I planned on getting some good acacia pics.

In any case, the Acacia pics were nothing spectacular, but i did spot these pigeons sitting on a high wire along Osborn. It was mid afternoon (about 3:45 I guess), so the streets weren't too busy yet, so these birds seemed rather relaxed.

When i took the shot, i didn't even realize the potential this capture had. I got home, uploaded the images, and when looking at this on a big screen, i realized that this was perfect for a 16:9 landscape. The black/white was just my first try, and I have to admit, I am very pleased with the result. the single white dove, facing the oppposite direction as all the others is the neatest thing about this picture, I never even noticed it until it had been up on Flickr for a day LOL.

RAIN

Well the winter rains in Phoenix finally got off to a halfway decent (albeit late) start. It was pretty misty and wet and cold all day yesterday, just like it's SUPPOSED to be. Too bad that lately it seems like our winters have degraded into just a minor cooldown, with no real prolonged coolness and precipitation like it used to be way back when.

In any case, I'm hoping for another wet winter like last year, so we can see some more wildflowers in a few months. We had a great year this spring, but I didn't have a so-great camera to capture it all. I mean it was nice, but a DSLR would be ideal for such an event. I hope i get my wish. :)

december bells

so it's been pretty cold and dreary lately, but apparently still warm enough for some "traditional" summer bloomers to keep blooming. So the other day, coming home from work, I happened to see that Bob's (neighbor) Tecoma alata were still blooming, and with the gray skies and whatnot, I knew I would be hard pressed to find more ideal conditions to take a picture of the flowers (shadows are usually MUCH too harsh)

So anyway, it was pretty dark and I had to boost ISO 800 (too lazy to go in a get the tripod) but this was the result. Pretty good I think, I like shooting in RAW, its my new "thing." LOL

Koala

Koala

I'm drawn to a lot of them because of their technical excellence, with great lighting, great subjects, perfect lighting, great framing, etc etc. Thats because I'm usually such a perfectionist myself, that I find it very nice to find people who are as picky about what they will put out on Flickr as I would be. THe other reason is that of course, I want to improve my own skills, and what better way than to find inspiration from others.

The other pictures that I am drawn to are like the one here, of this (presumably) tired koala (literally) just hanging out in the tree, sleeping. Its not the greatest picture of course, its a bit grainy, low res, etc. But even given the limitations of the camera that was used, I like the fact that Julio (one of my contacts) still framed right, etc etc. Even more important than that, I definitely "feel" a story in the picture. Its a cute koala, and shows him (Her?) getting to do something that sometimes we wish we could do. I like this picture :) So I decided to make it the first post of my new and improved blog.
